We were looking for a place away from confusion, where we could relax and just enjoy time.  And we found Riserva San Settimo, in the heart of the Marche region, about an hour’s drive from the seaside, two hours from Bologna and three hours from Florence. An estate surrounded by 400 acres of woods, trails and lakes, where nature is all around you, where you can wake up while listening to the birds chirping and where the true luxury is having time.

A wonderful story

This place has a wonderful story. It comes from Francescaromana’s love for her land, the Marche region, and from her desire to let her father’s dream come true, at least in part. Italo Bartoletti was born in the village where the estate lays,  Palazzo of Arcevia. He bought these lands and the countryhouses on them with a clear project in mind: creating a community, a place on the Marche hills, where artists from all over the world could meet, stay, confront and create. A return to the concept of home, workshop, cooperation and coexistence. Unfortunately, the project – which was launched in the early 70’s, featured in several publications and even presented at the Venice Biennale in 1976, was abadoned due to lack of funding.

Years later, Francescaromana trasformed the original project into Tenuta San Settimio, a countryside resort full of charme. Not quite her father’s dream, but just as beautiful. The idea is to create a place where hospitality, art, nature and relaxa can mix together and create a perfect balance. A sort of cocoon that guests can feel as soon as they get there, despite the estate extends over 400 hectares of woods.

Good to know

  • How to get there: by car, if you are coming from the North take the motorway A14, exit Senigallia. After the motorway tollgate, follow direction signs for Corinaldo and Castelleone di Suasa. Follow the road, till you drive across the town of Castelleone di Suasa, then turn left toward Arcevia. Keep driving for about 10 km till you get to Palazzo di Arcevia where you will find the direction signs to Riserva San Settimio. If you are coming from Rome, take the motorway A1 and exit at Orte, where you will take the highway E45 for about 100km.  Then get on the SS 298 towards Gubbio and then SS 452 towards Fabriano/Sassoferrato/Arcevia till you get to Arcevia. From here, follow the signs for San Lorenzo in Campo; after about 10 km you will reach Palazzo di Arcevia where the Riserva is located. By train, the closest railway station is Senigallia. From the station you can reach Palazzo di Arcevia by bus. By plane, the nearest airport is Falconara. However, due to the location of this resort, I would strongly suggest to hire a car.
  • Parking: lots of free parking space right next to each apartment.
  • Facilities: within the estate, besides the swimming-pool, the wellness centre and all the facilities already mentioned above, you will also find a restaurant with locally produced food, a bar by the pool and another restaurant al fresco, again by the pool, but only opened during summer time. At the main restaurant, you will find baby changing facilities.
  • What to do around: San Settimio is close to many enchanting villages, archeological and natural sites and castles. Within a few km, you can reach the beautiful medieval villages of Corinaldo, Gradara, Montelupone, Moresco, Visso, San Ginesio, Genga, Ostra and many others. Within half an hour drive, there is the beautiful archeological area of Civitalba (if you use a SatNav, digit Sassoferrato instead), with the ruins of the Roman city of Sentinum. If you love nature, do not miss the National Park of Gola Rossa: with its 9.167 hectares, it is the largest protected green area in the Marche region. Within the park, you can visit the breathtaking Frasassi caves, a fairytale world made of stalactites, stalagmites, alabaster and crystal lakes. And, for course, within easy reach there is Senigallia, also named Velvet Beach, and other beautiful seaside locations such as Numana, Portonovo, Sirolo and the lively Gabicce Mare.
