This is a very special place for our family. Every time we felt the desire to run away from the confusion of Milan, we drove here. By motorbike for a romantic escape, with Leo, our eldest “4 paws son” to discover new hiking routes and to celebrate our endless wanderlust, as soon as we became a family. Federico was 2 months old and he spent here his first night away.
Mariette Goemans, the Dutch owner of this romantic B&B, has seen our family grow through the years. And so has the Toads Family done, since Il Tulipano opened in 2006. The renovations weren’t finished yet and the rooms couldn’t even be locked. 2 hours and a half far from Milan, Il Tulipano is right behind the charming and unique Cinque Terre.
The B&B Il Tulipano
Il Tulipano is surrounded by wild green nature and the silence of Vara Valley, far away from the confusion but at the same time so close to Riomaggiore, Portovenere and La Spezia. The B&B was an ancient farmhouse and it has been divided into 4 beautiful rooms and 3 warm apartments, self-catered and fully equipped in order to make your stay easier. The entire B&B is furnished in a rural style thanks to wood beams, stone walls and parquet floors that create an intimate atmosphere of calm and relax.
During spring or summer, guests enjoy having breakfast in the courtyard under the marvellous sent of wisteria.
What we like
Even if Il Tulipano seems to be in the middle of nowhere and it could be only reached by private mean of transport – during a journey there, we met a German couple in their 60, that was traveling through Europe by a red Vespa – it really stands in a strategic position, giving guests the chance to spend a relaxing holidays, with low budget and higher quality, in comparison to the Cinque Terre seaside accommodation. Only silence, birds’ twittering and chestnut woods all around.
Mariette has 3 children, so she’s the best host if you travel with toddlers and kids. She’s always at guests disposal for local advice and to introduce them to the magnificent Cinque Terre land.
Good to know
- How to get there: by car A12 highway, exit Brugnato – Borghetto di Vara, follow SS1 until Beverino and Riccò del Golfo. The B&B is just 15 minutes drive from La Spezia
- Children facilities: a small playground on site where kids can play free in the garden. On request, the B&B provides with full baby equipment (cradle, folding bed, baby chair)
- Nearby activities: the B&B is completely surrounded by the silence of wild nature. Hiking trails that join Cinque Terre are very close to Il Tulipano, so guests would be immersed in the typical terraces cultivated with the grape. If you prefer a railway trip, just leave your car at La Spezia parking station and get on the train that links the picturesque 5 Terre.
- Best attraction: Cinque Terre and their 5 villages on rocks – Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The Poets Gulf where the marvellous Portovenere, Lerici and Tellaro lay in front of the sea.
